What is Industry 4.0?

The fourth industrial revolution (hence ‘Industry 4.0’) refers to the automation of traditional manufacturing techniques and practices.

This is done via the use of smart, integrated technology and machine-to-machine communication (M2M). Technologies such as artificial intelligence, genome editing, augmented reality, robotics, and 3-D printing, are already rapidly changing the way humans behave.

It’s an ongoing transformation, and one which focuses on improving the communication, self-monitoring, and automation of manufacturing.

Think machines that can detect and diagnose issues without the need for human intervention and you’re pretty much there. But it goes much further with the Internet of Things (IoT) now playing a crucial role in product development, iteration, and customer support.
