Friction drilling enables fast, precise, and durable thread creation in thin materials, directly on your CNC machine. By forming, not cutting, the material, Flowdrill creates a strong, integral bush that provides several times more thread length than the base material thickness.

Why friction drilling on cnc machines?

On vertical machining centers (VMC’s) and other CNC setups, friction drilling offers a clean, efficient process for structural and high-load applications.

Key advantages:

  • One clamping setup for both drilling and tapping
  • Short cycle times (often under 3 seconds per hole)
  • Stronger, lighter connections without welding or inserts
  • Consistent, repeatable quality due to CNC accuracy

Programming support

Each combination of material and thread size requires a specific CNC program to ensure smooth forming and consistent hole quality.
Provide us with:

  • Material type (mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium)
  • Material thickness
  • Thread size (e.g., M8, M10)
  • Desired surface finish (flat or with collar)

We will supply a custom program with the correct spindle speed, feed stages, and cycle time, so you can start right the first time.

Example Program

For friction drilling and tapping an M8 thread in mild steel (2 mm wall thickness), a Flowdrill tool running at 2180 RPM with programmed feed stages completes the cycle in 2.9 seconds.

Choosing the right tool holder

Efficient heat transfer is essential for tool life and spindle safety.
We recommend holders with integrated heat sinks (cooling rings).

Available types:

  • BT40, SK40, CAT40 for standard CNC machines
  • Ø20 mm cylindrical or Morse Taper 2 (MT2) for alternative setups

Our specialists can help select the most cost-effective and stable option for your machine.

Lubrication guidelines

Proper lubrication prevents wear and ensures clean threads.

Recommendations:

  • Mild steel: every 5–10 holes (coatings can reduce frequency)
  • Stainless steel: every 2–5 holes
  • Aluminium (Aludrill): mist or flood lubrication

Application methods:

  • Manual brush application
  • Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) system
  • Fluid bath with programmed tool dip

We can advise on the best setup based on your production speed and automation level.
